A long furred tom stood by the camp entrance, long neck craned gently towards the sky. His feathery ginger fur billowed softly in the breeze, and his sightless blue eyes shined in the sun. He breathed out deeply, close to a sigh but not quite as he took in the blur of blue. It was much better than the sight of the forest or even the camp, blobs of color that had absolutely no form or shape. Some cats would say it was better than darkness, but he didn't think so. He had to tune himself out of the array of meaningless colors, lest he become disoriented and develop a headache.
He glanced towards where he knew the apprentice's den would be, more out of habit than anything else. His jaws parted and ears perked as he attempted to locate his apprentice. His apprentice. He had felt an odd sense of hope and dread when he had been appointed to mentor the she-cat. He still knew very little about her, but she must of been terribly disappointed to be the test subject to see if he could mentor properly. At one time, he would of been a cat any apprentice would be delighted to have train them, but he thought very little of himself now. StarClan, please don't let this day end in disaster!

The silver apprentice had been basking in the sun on one of the cliffs with the other apprentices. She knew it wouldn't be long until Leaf-fall made its presence to the forest. So she tried to enjoy the sun while it lasted. Her ears flicked when the name Lionfrost gently floated through the air like leaves on a windy day. Why were the apprentices talking about her mentor? With a curious gaze through narrowed eyes the she-cat looked around the camp. Oh, that was why.
"I have to, let's bask again another day!" With a bunch of her hind legs, the she-cat jumped from the low cliffs that made up ThunderClans camp. She knew Lionfrost didn't have the best vision, so she tried her best not to startle him.I saw you near the apprentices den and assumed you were looking for me. Are we training today?" The she-cat suddenly got excited and swept the clearing with her long silver tail, batting the paws of her mentor in the process.

Lionfrost's ears perked, flicking slightly as the apprentice moved down from the cliff. Even if he looked her way, he wouldn't see anything, really, but he did so anyway. He blinked as he took in the familiar, distinct scent of his apprentice and heard her paws come to a stop a few paces in front of him. She seemed promising. She had the makings of a good warrior, and he knew that Pyrostar had been easy on him, giving him an apprentice who wasn't too lazy or too hyper or too arrogant.
He chuckled at her eagerness, a deep but not entirely gruff or unpleasant sound coming from within his chest. He felt her tail brush over his paws, a movement that would of made him jump in his earlier moons, when he first lost his vision, but he now ignored casually except for a slight twitch of his own feathery ginger tail in response. "Correct. I'm going to teach you how to hunt today."

The she-cat brightened her eyes at the amused grunt the tom let out. With a nod of her head, she got excited at the fact over hunting. She had never been out of the camp much except to see the territory. She couldn't help but shift her weight back and forth. She was going to learn how to hunt today! That meant she could out hunt Lionpaw, Thornpaw, EVEN Radiantpaw! With a glimmer of hope the she-cat stood up walking towards the camp entrance.
"I'm going to catch a mouse today! When I do I want to give it to one of the queens. Oh I know I'll give it to Raccoontail. I noticed she was starting to have a swollen belly! I'm excited for new kits I really am!" Silverpaw mewed. Perhaps she was rushing things a bit since she hadn't even learned how to hunt yet, but she would try her hardest nonetheless.

Lionfrost led the way confidently out of camp, tail held high. There was an amused expression on her face, whiskers twitching as he listened to the apprentice's ramblings. Much to his frustration, he couldn't recall a mental image of what the she-cat looked like. He knew she was obviously silver, and her tail must of been long, but other than that, he was at a loss. She had been born not long after his accident, and he was curious now. Did she have the build of a graceful hunter, or would she be too impatient to use her grace to hunt properly and end up a fighter? He hoped not. He dreaded fighting training, what was once his best skill, not his worst.
"I'm sure she'll have beautiful kits," he mewed, a bit distractedly, but flashed a small smile at her all the same. He had lead them into a very small clearing, surrounded by the thick undergrowth. He stopped suddenly, turning towards her.

The lithe silver apprentice stretched herself out and placed herself into a hunters crouch. She recalled watching the older apprentices practice in camp as a kit. She constantly practiced so she could impress her mentor with the knowledge she already had. As she moved across the forest floor she giggled playfully. She hadn't made much noise. She was patient though and would learn to be nearly silent.
Then a thought struck her. Did this tom know what she looked like. She wanted to tell him but she also didn't want to offend him. She looked away for just a moment, then met his gaze once more."I'm a silver she-cat...with ummm darker gray tabby stripes and darker gray dots...blue eyes...my mom says blue like the sky." she mewed quickly before moving across the floor attempting to master her crouch.
"am I doing this okay?" she asked wanting to get everything perfect and of course change the subject.

Lionfrost stood attentively, obviously focused as he listened to the soft pawsteps of his apprentice, felt for them under his own fairly large paws. He felt a swell of pride. She was a natural. He wouldn't have much trouble with her. She had a couple beginner problems, easily fixed, but he could work them out problem more effectively than a cat with full sight.
Suddenly, he had the acute feeling of eyes gazing at him, and he blinked his previously closed eyes open in slight surprise. At her explanation, he was both shocked, impressed, and slightly embarrassed, ears burning. It was odd how she knew just what he was feeling, a kind of connection, and he was glad she wasn't too afraid to offend him. He admired that. "Thanks..." he murmured, voice a soft rumble, a mix of gratitude and admiration in his tone. Feeling a bit uncertain, he anxiously flicked his ginger tail. "Don't be afraid to voice your opinion or ask me any questions about my, well, lack of sight. It won't offend me, I promise," he mewed, just to get it out in the open.
Then, he dropped into his own crouch beside her, shockingly smooth and fluid for such a big tom. "Beautifully done," he mewed, quiet voice rich with praise. He begin careful gliding over the ground, slowly so she got a good look. "Keep your tail from dragging on the ground. The slightest rustle can be sensed." Then, an amused look crossed his face, lips quirking to show sharp teeth. "It might also help not to giggle."

Silverpaw twitched her whiskers with amusement. Not giggling would help not startle the prey. She lifted her tail just a little bit as she got back into her hunters crouch. She stalked across the forest floor a couple of times before looking at Lionfrost with hopeful eyes. She swiped her tail back and forth her blue eyes sparkling.
"Was that better Lionfrost? Can we go catch prey now I think I can do it! no, I know I can. Lionfrost PLEASE!!!!!" Silverpaw wasn't hard to control, she was just eager to learn. She didn't want to be a handful.

Lionfrost chuckled at his eager little apprentice. She was certainly amusing, that was for sure. "I suppose it couldn't hurt. Besides, the best way to learn is through action," he mewed, although he was fairly sure that within a few hunts, she'd be a graceful, beautiful hunter already. It took him moons to get as good as he was, but some cats were simply like Silverpaw. He led her off with a sweep of his long tail, opening his jaws for signs of prey.

Silverpaw's eyes brightened when her mentor said that she could go off and hunt. Parting her jaws she scented a mouse. She carefully lowered herself and picked her tail up just a little bit. She remembered NOT to giggle of course and crept silently and gracefully across the forest floor. Within moments she spotted the furry critter and found herself swiping her tongue along her stripped muzzle. With a twitch of her whiskers she waited.
She bunched her hind legs and sprung forward, claws outstretched. She timed it perfectly but she had been too far away. She somehow managed to swipe the mouse into the air. Granted the mouse squeaked as it did so. It landed on the ground and she killed it with a quick bite. She frowned at her messy catch.
She picked it up and brought it towards her mentor and dropped it at his paws."I'm sorry for such the messy catch Lionfrost..I'll do better next time..but I caught this for you...because you're such a wonderful mentor. I wouldn't want anyone else." she mewed twitching her whiskers with amusement.

Lionfrost followed his apprentice silently, blinking his blind blue eyes every now and then. His ears twitched as he listened to her glide through the forest floor, glad his ears were better than the mouse's. However, he flinched as he heard her stop. She was too far. He let out a relieved breathe as he heard her scuffle with the small creature, feeling his whiskers twitch with amusement. It sounded like she was fighting a badger more than a tiny mouse.
He felt his ears burn slightly as she spoke to him, but he was quick to shake it off, clearing his throat. "No need to apologize. Most cats don't even catch anything their first time. You just jumped to early is all. You'll figure it out," he mewed, shrugging his shoulders. He remembered moons of judging the mouse's distance using his ears only. It was more foolproof than sight, but harder to learn. "And thank you. That means a lot. Although it helps that you're already such a brilliant hunter," he purred, feeling a slight bit of pride both for himself and his apprentice as he crouched over the kill.

Silverpaw let out a warrm purr. She was proud of what she did. Nontheless the she-cat twirled her tail with happiness even though she nearly missed her catch."I know I was too far away. I noticed just as I was about to pounce." she sighed looking at her first catch. She started to wonder if Radiantpaw had caught anything as of late.
"I see the way...some warriors look at you Lionfrost. Like you're different. Or Incapable. Sometimes I wonder if I was given to you as an apprentice not because you derseved me...but to make you fail...and..." she paused trying to gather the right words."I don't want to be a test...I want to be an achievement so I'm going to do my best to make you proud and I don't see you as different. You are a warrior like everyone else. Everyone else is just too mousebrained to see it." she mewed while practicing her hunters crouch once more.

Lionfrost inhaled sharply at the she-cat's words. He had never had anyone say something like that to him. Sure, Shrewleap was ever supportive, but even she hadn't taken it that far. She was always just a little nervous about expressing real feelings. He knew she would be furious to even think for a moment that someone was trying to make him fail, but it had crossed his mind too. He had heard the snickering, the hushed whispers and obvious gasps, that came when his name was called as mentor. They had stung, but he showed no outward signs of them doing so. "Thank you Silverpaw. I swear to StarClan I won't fail you," he murmured, voice warm and determined. "That means more to me than you'd ever know..."

Silverpaw lashed her tail all about. She couldn't contain her excitement."I'll work hard too you know! We can work hard together! What do you say?" The she-cat stood up and skipped around. She wrinkled her nose before dropping into a crouch. She saw a second mouse. This catch would be perfect. Stalking across the floor as graceful as she could she made her way towards the creature. She got as close as she could before pouncing it and killing it. She picked it up and placed it on the ground, burrying it of course.
"Ill be such a good hunter!" she mewed before circiling around her mentor."Can we go for a walk Lionfrost? I really want to see the rest of the territory, explore a little bit. And get to know you more, It helps to establish a relationship with your mentor...at least that's what Radiantpaw says...."

Lionfrost smiled at his apprentice, sharp teeth showing. "I think that's a wonderful idea," he purred, shooting a rather fond look at the other cat. His own ears suddenly perked, head swinging in the direction of the scuffling creature just as his apprentice dropped into a crouch. He listened, chest swelling with pride, as his apprentice quickly and easily made her catch. He could barely hear her move, and her pounce was perfect and sure.
"You're sure to be a better hunter than I ever will be," he complimented honestly. He was a good hunter now, even though it used to be his worst skill, but he wasn't a natural like his apprentice. It was something he was forced to learn to be useful to his clan. She'd surpass him in due time as her grace and experience grew though, despite all his hard work, and he was in no way bitter or jealous, only proud. He gave her a nod. "I'd say you earned that. And Radiantpaw gives good advice," he mewed, ear flicking, though a bit of unease bubbled in his chest as he padded forward, leading the way. He had never quite been the social cat that his sister was, and he couldn't skillfully hide his feelings behind jokes and cheerfulness as she often did. Not to mention his social skills has rusted greatly after his blindness. Still, he tried to hide this all best he could from his apprentice. What would she think of her mentor getting nervous over a simple walk and chat?
